With the new year beginning in just a few short days what better time to plan out your 2017 marketing strategy? Outlining an entire year of marketing content can be daunting, so take it a little bit at a time and plan the overall strategies and goals you want to implement and accomplish. We’ve put together a short list of some of the best things small businesses can do in order to make their 2017 marketing the most successful it can be.
Have Specific Marketing Goals
One of the biggest mistakes a small business owner can make when setting goals is making them too vague. Being incredibly specific about what you want and how you’re going to reach your goals will help you better determine if you’ve reached those goals at the end of the year. Instead of “grow sales”, try saying you’ll “grow sales by X percentage in the third quarter”. Try setting a goal like “decreasing your website’s bounce rate to 30% by the end of the year” instead of just “decreasing your bounce rate”. Having specific goals will help small business owners better determine how to go about reaching those goals.
Optimize Your Website for Mobile Usage
Recent studies show that mobile usage now accounts for about 65% of all digital media time1 and that over half of all web traffic is mobile2. With these kinds of numbers, small business owners need to ensure their website is user-friendly and easy to navigate on mobile devices.
Avoid any type of Flash player or pop-ups. Flash is rarely supported on mobile devices and your site visitors may miss out on promotions or other important content. If you want to get creative, HTML5 works best for this on mobile devices. Pop-ups can be annoying on desktop and are even more so on mobile devices when you can’t exit out of them. This could lead to visitors simply closing down the page, which will negatively affect your site’s bounce rate.
When designing a site for mobile screens, also keep in mind that many users will be using their fingers to scroll. Be sure users will not have to pinch, zoom, or tap in too small of a space. Fingers come in all shapes and sizes and when a mobile site doesn’t account for larger fingers, it can be difficult and cumbersome for users to fill out forms and click buttons to navigate your site.
Plan Future Marketing Content
This is one of the best things you can do to make your marketing for 2017 easier! Take an afternoon to sit down and plan out all of your next month’s social content. It may sound like a hassle in the moment, but it’ll save time in the long run and allow merchants to spend more time growing their business.
Tools like Hootsuite and Sprout Social enable you to plan out and schedule your posts weeks ahead of time across all social platforms. Even if your research finds that many of your social visitors are online between 1am and 4am, your posts can be scheduled for then and you won’t lose any sleep or forget to hit “publish”.
Keyword-based Optimization for Past Blog Content
If you post blog content weekly or even bi-weekly, you’ve already built up a great resource for your current site visitors and potential visitors. This wealth of knowledge is perfect for promoting in social posts. In analyzing their reports, Hubspot found that many of their blog views and leads were coming from posts that had been published in the past4. If you have a lot of content on your small business site already, try going back and making sure your posts contain keywords and phrases that tie into your SEO efforts and point people back to your website.
